Whats in a name...

Public

From an article on scrippsnews.com:
Cunning, strategy, wit and stealth are all required for what might be the most critical part of gaming: Picking a good character name. You don't want other gamers to see you with some dumb "Lord of the Rings" name like "Frodo" or "Gandalf." That's the gamer equivalent of matching plaid and polka dots. Besides, dumb names invite ridicule, something most gamers are happy to dish out. In "World of Warcraft" this usually comes in the form of some oddball reference to Chuck Norris kicking your butt. Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the deal is with that, either. Still, whenever I see a character with a popular movie name like "Maverick," "Iceman," "Neo" or "Morpheus," I just want to give it a big electronic wedgie. So how do you pick a good name? It's not that movie names are all bad, but if you're going to pick one, you need to find something obscure, off-the-wall or just downright strange. Another tip for movie names or names of real-life people is to come up with a bad pun spinoff. One amusing one I found through a Web search was "Osamabinhidden." In "Warcraft," I made one called "ChickNorris."

In shooter games like "Halo 2," when you get killed by a character named "yourmom," the game says: "you were killed by yourmom" and if you kill somebody named "yourmom," the game says: "you killed yourmom."

The bizarre can also be good fodder for gamer names. Some of the weirder ones I came across are "7SteamyHippos" although I'm not sure why you'd need seven of them "KrazyWaffleman," "MuffinMonster," "EvilDarkHamster", "AngryLlama"

Some of my favorite "Warcraft" names play off the Horde's hatred of the Alliance which are elves, dwarves, humans and gnomes _ and the desire to eat them. Some of my names are "Dwarfchewer," "Elfchewer," "Brainchewer" and "Yumbrains."

...

So in your character naming process, what do you look for in a gaming name? Do you go with something simple, creative or offensive? Does your name mean something that others dont know and in what way do you feel it defines you as a gamer? Also what crazy and or insane names have you seen around that you have no idea how it made it through the game filters? Do tell, great friday conversation piece Very happy

Well, my Blackrabbit name

Well, my Blackrabbit name obviously came from Watership Down, which is funny because I normally scoff at the idea of taking any name from a work of fiction; I think it's cheesy. But Rabbit's been my nicknmae since kindergarten and it was only cemented further when I decided that was my favorite book, so Blackrabbit it was.

However, in every other naming situation I strive to make my character names unique and interesting, which is how I have ended up with a slew of names I think are fairly cool... in EQ there were Blackrabbit, Kelagry, and Mourntouch.

In WoW I have Nyalla of course, as well as Kohanna, Anukh, and Iah.

The only one that has possibly been influenced by anything other than my own imagination was Nyalla (not nee, but nye-alla), whose name was indirectly a byproduct of having watched the Lion King (Nala) before making her.

The funnest part of a new character is the name, imho. Smiling

Devlyn's picture

Well.. Devlyn originated

Well..

Devlyn originated from Devlin (which seemed much more popular than i thought, and even turned out to be a lastname)

I really forget where i got it from.

Donelle i got from an old D&D character i used to play called Donelle Orewind.

In fact.. i think my UO char was named that. Smiling

Luciserene is new. I think its a spin off of a generated name from WoW i got when i made a new Undead character.

I never try to use stupid names that take you out of the games atmosphere. Like gandolf gandalph fardo frodoo and crap like that.

Although... Daisy and I have 2 chars set aside for the naked gnome race, whenever that happens.

She's Bostonn and I'm Redsox. Smiling

...

Well I usually try to stay original in my naming process. My warriors name Serrenitty is actually very old. Most people think I coined it off of the movie serenity (good flick go watch it) but really it came from a bed and breakfast I stayed at in colorodo ages ago. Ever since I visited it I have kind of changed my outlook on life. I used to be a serious hard ass and kind of a stressed out grump. A week at this b&b/spa really did change my outlook on life. So in tribute I coined this toon to remind me of what I did to change myself. My paladin is named fairechild after a very unknown band that plays world music. Very peaceful and calming. I also enjoyed comics growing up and really liked the fairchild character from the gen 13 comics. They both inspire me as the music explains a lot of my life and fair from gen 13 has big breasts and kicks arse Razz Some of my other toons are Firebane - named after a piers anthony character, Riverwild - named after a safari spot in south africa, Vendetta - named after the comic book v for vendetta - named waaayyy... before the movie existed - started using this name back in eq1... monks rule, and my last wow name is Nightfell - I grew up in maine not far from where steven king lives.. this is on a sign outside his house - always held a meaning to me since he writes cheesy but awesome horror novels.

And for my First Person Shooter experience my name has and always will be kamakazijeepdriver - battlefield 1942 started my interest in fps and since Ive played um all Very happy

Ahh.. yes. FPS. I use

Ahh.. yes. FPS.

I use Adversity. Smiling

Because it usually means bad luck for the other team.

Jayfoot Bloomrose is a sort

Jayfoot Bloomrose is a sort of amalgamation of my given name...

IJ Rosenblum

The foot part was added because of my hobbitish qualities. I have used the name in live action and pen and paper since about 1988 in college.

ozwyn's picture

been using Ozwyn since 1987.

been using Ozwyn since 1987. Used to do a lot of LARP type activities with it. I was doing a saxon character and combined 2 different name elements to create it.

Also used Daelvrik since 1985, but it is rarely seen anymore.

Dias's picture

Ive used Dias since I

Ive used Dias since I started playing Pen and Paper. Was the first character I ever made. No real reason for the name other than it sounded good at the time

I used Dias on Diablo, UO (In UO I named all may ships Icewind I, Icewind II, etc. Always used Icewind my last name OR the name of something I own, like my current pet.)

I used Dias in EQ as a Half Elf ranger, then used Diasx when I changed to a Elven ranger. Dias continued in DAoC, Planetside, and in EQ2.
In City of Heroes, I played a Scrapper named Cueball. Seemed to fit better that Dias for the game

When I got to WoW, I had to revert to Diasx again, as the name was taken.

Rose's picture

in eq1 i had a whole series

in eq1 i had a whole series of names that had the name Rose in them (a nickname of mine) Rosehawke, Roseshade, Niterose, etc. Rose paired with the essence of the character i played. Roseshade was a SK for example.

in DAOC i had a few rose characters, Rosehild for one (since we played midgard and hild was the name of one of valkyries) and picked the name Sweetpea since it was so incongruous to go with my hulking female troll hehe. when we merged our Ravens guild in with Scarab, i started picking names that meant crow or raven in different languages.

in eq2, all my names mean crow or raven in various languages, Fala, Vrona, Meeki, etc.

for last names, Tor and i always pick a mix of both of our characters' traits. (ravendirge - raven for me, dirge for tor's skald; stormcrow - storm for tor's warden/fury and crow for me, etc.)

haveta just go with basic

haveta just go with basic fantasy sounding names, perhaps mixed with an aspect of nickname. Dinaden Gahalantine has been my long running warrior type character since 99 and EQ. Din and Gahalantine are both names of Arthurian knights, I just thought Gahalantine sounded like a good heroic surname so I appropriated both.

Horamir is my healer character name...I inherited a guildmate's EQ account after he quit. He had a low level cleric named Horammer, who I leveled up to level 54 I think it was, and started going by Horammer as my board name. I since have changed it to Horamir, but no longer have a main char in WoW named Horamir (Horamir in WoW is a level 15 shelved hunter that I didnt enjoy all that much).

Chipmunk is my exception, since The Extraordinary Miss Chipmunk was my costumed AR blaster from CoH, and I have a history of writing up stories of Dinaden going through portals to other games, I decided Miss Chip went through a crazy Circle of Thorns portal and ended up in Azeroth, and since her guns didnt work there, decided to go with the next most destructive thing and train as a warlock Twisted Evil She has a good backstory, involving the CIA, assassin training, and the aquisition of superpowers from chipmunk DNA. You had to be there.

ozwyn's picture

actually given how you

actually given how you dressed Chipmunk in CoH i assumed it was really her P0rn screen name Razz

any resemblance to Jill Kelly would be strictly coincidental! And the tight leather is for um...crime fighting!

Nelz's picture

My character names are

My character names are creations of the name generator aside from changing the first letter. Unless its really cool, no more than 5 letters. My EQ character Hephaetus taught me short easy names are usually better in online games. In swg the name generator gave me Fates. In EQ2, the generator gave me some 4 or 5 letter name ending in ico so I just made it Xico. And in wow the generator gave me some 4 letter name ending in elz so changed the first letter and made Nelz. Pretty much the only variant I have is a character named Bigsexxy hopefully reserved for the new expansion race. Until I find a name i really like the name generator is my friend. =)

Urkgarr - DAOC - I was a

Urkgarr - DAOC - I was a troll and wanted something that sounds like grunts and kind of dumb. This was also my the character I joined Scarab in. I should really change it, but I haven't figured out what yet.

Phelidae - EQ2 - a version of Felidae, the feline Family, this character is the cat race.

Turandot - WoW - Puccini's opera Turandot, the ice princess.

Strophe - WoW - the Greek root, to turn, twist, also something to do with poetry, STANZA. I was thinking of a duel wielding warrior doing some sort of a blade dance.

Canopy - WoW - Druid, canopy is like a cover, so a cover of natural protection.

Arteron - WoW - A mix of the Greek Goddess of Hunt Artemis and another Greek god I don't remember, since Artemis is a female and this character is a male, I just changed the ending.

Scruf's picture

Re: Urkgarr - DAOC - I was a

Quote Urkgarr:
Turandot - WoW - Puccini's opera Turandot, the ice princess.

This is a so-so opera, but has the most amazing aria (Nesun Dorma). Pavarotti singing Nesun Dorma will bring a tear to your eye.

Urkgarr's picture

The story isn't that bad

The story isn't that bad except Turandot's sudden change of heart. Puccini never finish this Opera and who knows what the ending would have been since someone else had to finish it and there are 2 different endings.

Well, let's see...

Ixchael
I just made it up. I wanted to try out a dark elf necromancer in EverQuest and had run out of names. So I spent an hour or so coming up with one. It seems to be quite unique (thus always available), acceptable in any game I have tried so far, and it fits the fantasy genre well. The downside is that it can be difficult to spell and pronounce if you are not already familiar with it.

Stout
This was one of my first online names (used in Diablo). I don't recall any special reason for picking it, except for it sounding nice and being easy to spell and remember. I don't think I was aware of the different meanings of the word at the time I chose it. Most people associate it with beer, some with the physical or mental connotations. In any case, it is not a bad name for a character. Unfortunately, it is not always accepted (for reasons unknown to me) and in some cases it is already taken. For these reasons, I can't use it much anymore.

Ffaffner / Ffaffy
Years ago, I made a list of names I liked - for use in D&D and later on in computer games. Ffaffner was on this list. I believe I picked it up from the book Shamrak by the Danish author Bjarne Reuter - a book I read in school and probably liked, though I don't recall the story at all anymore. I believe it is a variation of the dwarf (and later: dragon) Fafner (Fafnir) in Norse mythology. Either way, I don't use it much anymore.

Myggen
I used this name in Dark Age of Camelot for an exceptionally tall troll character of mine. It is a Danish word (my native language), meaning 'the mosquito'. The name fit the setting (Midgard) and it made sense that his virtual friends would give him such a nickname - in the same way that 'Tiny' is usually anything but. I've gotten a fair amount of chuckles from Scandinavian people I've met online, and for those who do not know the meaning it still seems like a fantasy-like name. I still use it.

Hirocien
Another name I made up. Somewhat easy to remember and spell, plus it just sounds cool Smiling

It is a variation of the name of a race in Star Trek (the Hirogen). The Hirogen are a race whose main thrill is the hunt. You can read more about them on Wikipedia. It fit the style of the character I was creating at the time. I still use the name.

I think that about covers my known aliases Smiling

Ginric's picture

Ginric came about when a GM

Ginric came about when a GM in EQ misread the name of my froglock cleric and thought it was offensive. I log in one day and i am now Ginric
Bronthas i thought i made up when i created my ranger on EQ but then one day im running around mistmoor and i see this guy http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=11384 so i guess he left an impresion at some point in the past that i forgot about =P
Geanwen was the random generated name of one of my first EQ characters and al the rest i use i just kinda made up

Dolvin's picture

Dolvin and Sytan were two

Dolvin and Sytan were two names I made up as a 5 year old just newly exposed to Dungeons and Dragons. I have NO idea where they came from - who knows how a 5 year old's mind works? However, I played Dolvin to a level 36 thief (BASIC D&D, NOT AD&D) and Sytan was a halfling. So, no great historical context or reference is involved here!

Miri's picture

When Jayfoot first

When Jayfoot first introduced me to online gaming back in EQ1, he suggested that I use a name that was short and easy to spell. Miri was a take-off on Mary - I don't know why, but the first phrase that went through my head as I sat down to think about it was "Hail Mary, full of grace".

When we moved to DAoC, I wanted to make it sound more Nordic since we were on the Midgaard side. So, Miri -> Miridwyn.

Since then, by the time I get around to buying a game, Miri is usually taken, so I end up using Miridwyn anyway. All my alts are now named Miri-something. Smiling

Dathor's picture

It usually takes me a while

It usually takes me a while to come up with names for my characters. In EQ I started using Aurion, but shelved that character after a while. Next I created Eiron, which is what I used in EQ2. I chose to use another name in WoW. Dathor is kind of a combo of two random names. One name popped up with "thor" in it (and I always did like the thor character from stargate) so I added that to a "Da" that popped up with another name. My alts names are a different. Can't remember how I came up with Housebroken for my warlock. I named my gnome rogue Basketcase since gnomes always look like basketcases anyway. Smiling I named my warrior Incompetence so that if anyone ever said I sucked at playing a warrior I could just point to the name and say what did you expect. Very happy

Ax Demon's picture

The history of Ax

A long and sordid story lies behind my name, going back to when I was the tender age of 7 (that's right, seven). At the time, I was an on/off/lack-of-attention-span reader of the animorphs books series. One of the characters, an alien with a long complicated name of which escapes me after almost ten years since the date, was going to hide on earth and had to choose a human name, he chose Ax, I thought it was a cool name, and that's how it began.

Not long afterwards my parents got Aol, and I got to choose my own screenname, I chose the name Mewax, supposedly being a cross between my favorite Pokemon, Mew, and my self-appointed nickname, Ax. Most people, unfortunately, pronounced it me-wax as opposed to it's real pronounciation of Mew-Ax.

That was when I was seven. Over the years, I matured, and was introduced to the world of chatroom fantasy roleplaying, a fascinating world of magic and wonder, where I soon discovered that my name's unfortunate mistaken pronounciation wasn't all that bad, and I became a kind of shapeshifting character.

Unfortunately, the name fell to the attacks of hackers multiple times, and it was eventually decided that it must be destroyed to ensure the safety and security of our computer.

Because of this predicament, I was forced to choose a new name, slightly influenced by the roleplaying chatrooms, I chose the name Ax Demon, and it stuck. In the favor of synergy, I use the name for almost anything where I need a tag or nickname. Hell, most of my friends call me Ax now.

Nowadays, you can find an Ax just about anywhere, most of the time it's an Ax Demon, and just about all the time it's me.

And that's the story of Ax Demon, any questions?

Houndsteeth's picture

Hunden - pretty obvious to

Hunden - pretty obvious to German speakers, means dogs or hounds in German.

Gyrfalcon - the name of my warrior in EQ. It's the Middle English name for the Peregine Falcon, noted as the fastest animal on earth that moves under its own power.

Hunden

Also means 'the dog' in Scandinavian languages. I like it Smiling

Spicedrum's picture

I stole the Rum thing from

I stole the Rum thing from Therum Smiling His toons in DAoC where all "Rum" toons. Back when he was trying to get me interested in DAoC, he had me make him toon. So I did. It was Luri Champ named Abitofrum (A Bit of Rum, get it..luri..yeah anyway). He refused to play and said it was a horrible toon ( I think this was a ploy), so I played it just to prove it was a good toon. Alas...all my toons from then on out where named Rum.

Scruf's picture

Scruf

I was Dom and Shunt in UO, Dom because I like that name, and Shunt in honor of this transient (who we nicknamed shunt) who hung out in the laundromat where I took my clothes during my early college days.

When EQ came out, I was a harcore UO pvper and crafting supplier for a guild on Lake Superior called DRP (Dragonriders of Pern, go fig). I had no intention whatsoever of quitting. However, a friend (Boann/Sorann from EQ) who worked in our lab in Ventura CA took me to his house to check it out. I tinkered around in the noob zone for awhile and was immediately hooked. Bought a copy of EQ and opened an account. Played on my friend's computer (I was commuting to Ventura and didn't have my own) and, having fun with the character generator, made a bearded female dwarf. Scruf was an apt enough name for such a creation.

I never bothered making another character after the one I was half-heartedly playing around with there in the beginning, and have since used the name in AO, DAOC, COH, EQ2 and WOW. I've had a few alts here and there, named Dom and Shunt.

Truthfully, names drive me

Truthfully, names drive me batty. It always takes me forever to come up with one and even then, I’m not happy with it. The Phrogg thing has come from me being thoroughly feed up with trying to pick easy screen names but appeals to my slightly dyslexic spelling skills.

I will say I let the WoW randomization pick my two character names and I’m sorry I’ve done that. I can’t remember my poor druid’s name to save my soul

Quite possibly, I’ll get it right some day.

Tiassa's picture

Brust FTW

Tiassa, Vallista, Jhegaala, Lyorn, Athyra, Iorich, and Dzur...

Each of my characters (some on different servers) thus far have had names from the Seventeen Houses of Dragaera. I figure when I run out of names I should re-evaluate which characters I have.

Thus far, my only regret is that I couldn't name a rogue "Jhereg," and thus far while I'm by nature a Yendi, I haven't actually named a character Yendi.

Phoenix sinks into decay
Haughty dragon yearns to slay.
Lyorn growls and lowers horn
Tiassa dreams and plots are born.
Hawk looks down from lofty flight
Dzur stalks and blends with night.
Issola strikes from courtly bow
Tsalmoth maintains though none knows how.
Vallista rends and then rebuilds
Jhereg feeds on others' kills.
Quiet iorich won't forget
Sly chreotha weaves his net.
Yendi coils and strikes unseen
Orca circles, hard and lean.
Frightened teckla hides in grass
Jhegaala shifts as moments pass
Athyra rules minds' interplay
Phoenix rise from ashes gray.
