Plasma or LCD?????

I'm about to buy a TV for the basement and I'm not sure which way to go. I used to be comletely against plasmas but now I think the two types are as comparable as they ever have been. The main difference seems to be price right now with Plasma taking a slight lead for the screen size. I'm looking for experience (recent I guess) with either. I currently have a Smasung DLP (one with a color wheel) and have been fairly satisfied except that the blacks aren't all that great. The LCD I'm looking at is the Samsung LN46A750. The plasmas are the Samsung PN50A650 (TOC since the wall behind the TV is red Smiling ) and the Panasonic TH-PZ800U. We want to get a Wii and I wouldn't mind playing WoW on it once in a while. The basement only has one window in the room with the TV and the lights are on a dimmer. The room is also long and the TV will be viewed in the narrow dimension (11'). Let me know what you think. I need to get it orderd tomorrow so I can have it for poker Beer Toast

For picture quality, vibrant

For picture quality, vibrant colors, etc it used to be plasma hands down, but these days LCD has caught up and is now pretty much equivalent to plasma in those regards. I'd recommend LCD because it uses much less electricity than plasma. Just look in person and compare LCDs on major brands like Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic. Samsung is my personal fav. They probably make the best LCDs right now. For plasma, Panasonic is the best. Both are very affordable right now in 40-46" sizes, but scale up in cost rapidly at 50 and 60+ inch sizes. If you really want affordable BIGscreen HDTV, I'd recommend DLP, tho' I know that the Panasonic 42" and 50" plasmas are VERY well regarded. The Sammy LN46A750 is an excellent overall choice.

I have an early 61" Sammy DLP and yes the black levels aren't very good, although overall color and brightness, resolution are nice. I also have a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD that I bought this past spring/summer (LNT4061F) and the blacks on that are inky super jet black, its sick...They have come out with at least 1 generation since this one and they are even better now, you really can't go wrong with a Sammy LCD. You can get a 40" 1080p LCD right now for around $1000, a good size for watching TV, but if its for movies, go 50-60" maybe 50" if you will have speakers along the narrow dimension of the room and not watching from too far back.

I lean towards LCD's. I've

I lean towards LCD's. I've seen Horamir's LCD. It rocks to no end.

Also, a LCD tv can make a pretty good monitor for WoW..... if you're evil enough.

Also wanted to point out

Also wanted to point out that plasma's dont have a long life for the money you pay. LCD's are the way.Get warrenty:D

Good point on the 5 year

Good point on the 5 year lifespan issue. I had hoped they are fixed it, but I am guessing that limitation is alive and well.

LCD TV's, like PC's, still seems like it is on that price/performance trend of both getting cheaper and better over time.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Thanks for the advice guys. I won't tell you which model I bought for a month or so but then I will give you a full review. That should give me enough time to get the PC down there and hooked up to it as well as watch a few blu ray movies Very happy

Check it...

Have a friend back home that bought a 60" LCD Sony Bravia for the sole purpose of playing wow and his 360 on it. The resolution and picture quality is so clear you could believe that it was a window into an alternate dimension. In terms of inputs and lifespan LCD is the way to go atm. Make sure to get an extended warranty where ever you buy it and remember, you are buying a big ass tv / investment. A few extra dollars now will be worth it in the long run Very happy

"Leave my welfare epics alone... they are just as purple as yours!" Always a Rogue in Plate.

We bought both...

About 2 years ago we bought a 42" Plasma for our living room and a smaller LCD for our bedroom - the plasma has an unbelievable picture...it is far superior to the LCD. Both are HD with HD satellite receivers - I generally (being a woman) dont get into all the hype over size, numbers, etc. as long as I get to see the show I want to see....but if either my husband or I had to choose one over the other, we both would choose the plasma.

My two cents Smiling

Ok... To add more confusion

Ok... To add more confusion to this debate.

That 67 inch 1080P DLP with LED Horamir just got?

Best picture I have seen so far. I mean, he was playing some Lord of the rings dvd's, and the picture FAR surpassed the movie theater.

the LED lamp is also good for something crazy like 60,000 hours.

The color depth, blacks/bright colors was incredible.

Also, DLP is Cheaper these days as LCD tv's are the "in" tech.

and that was just an

and that was just an upconverted regular DVD, not Blu Ray (admittedly, the extended edition LOTR are some of the best picture quality DVDs around, since they had a huge budget and spread the movies out over 2 discs, so they didn't compress the data and reduce the quality) Just imagine when they come out with the LOTR trilogy on Blu Ray. Unfortunately, rumor is that wont happen till 2010, since they are busy on the Hobbit =/

That just means you wait for

That just means you wait for the hobbit to come out on dvd and get a 4 movie "ultimate version" set, naturally.

OOH....

Cant wait!

Never understood why Jackson didn't do The Hobbit before the other ones. That was always my favorite!
