Random thoughts

Here are some grownup Belle pics, with a few of Kahuna thrown in. Kahuna is now the family baby at just over a year old. Belle is two, Sidney is 12, and Andy there is 36! Wow! Geriatric!

Okay. So here's the story,

Okay. So here's the story, since some folks haven't heard it yet. I work at a vet clinic down in Round Rock, TX. Some clients of ours who we previously considered "normal" got a little kitten. Adorable little orange fluff ball. We neutered and declawed him around 6 months and told them, as we always do, that now that he has no front claws, he can no longer go outside, since we've amputated those first digits and left him with 2/3 of his defenses gone. "Okay,' they say.

Couple months later they show up with the kitty, whose name then was Draken, and want us to patch up three puncture wounds in his back. "How did he get these?" We ask. "We don't know, he was outside," they reply.

Add in a few blinks of surprise, but ultimately they pay for medical care and we have to put a penrose drain in one of the punctures on Draken's back because it's abcessed and gross. They take him home, and in two weeks they return for a checkup with this astounding news, "We think he has rabies."

Okay, well, there isn't really a -test- for rabies aside from killing him and taking a brain biopsy. He was vaccinated, but you never know. So, the only thing you can do is place kitty in quarantine for 45 days and wait it out. Well, neither the SPCA or the shelter had room for him. We offered to do it at boarding prices, but that would amount to about 1,000 dollars even if we gave them a discount and they couldn't afford that. So their options, the vet says, are euthanasia, or surrendering the cat.

Bear in mind we're reasonably sure Draken doesn't have rabies. Why did they think he had rabies? The answer, he was acting grumpy, not being playful, and had "looked at the mom strangely."

Your cat has a tube in his back.

A tube.

In his BACK.

Not good enough. Razz Apparently kitty not allowed to be pissy for any reason.

So, the owners flipped out and said the vet was being cruel to them and not breaking the news gently, blah blah blah. "Well we'll just have to euthanize him."

Euthanize a really sweet kitty who YOU fucked up? REALLY? So, after some talking to they agree to surrender him and ask what happens after the 45 days are up. Well, we told them we'd adopt him out to a loving home at a substantial discount.

"Oh, so we could re-adopt him!"

*smacks face with palm*

To make an already long enough story short, Draken lived at our clinic for several months with lots of people interested in taking him home, but no commitments. Finally Andy and I couldn't take it any more; we brought him home shortly before Christmas just to stay for a weekend and see how he worked out, and he is still here. He and our other kittehs don't get along super fantastic, but he and Belle are in WUB with each other. So Kahuna (aka Kahuna-buddha, Kahoots, and Fatass) gets to stay. Smiling

Lookit mah guns! I've been hitting the gym. Or repeatedly lifting Fatass... both require substantial caloric investment.

For the record, v. hard to get decent pictures of high-speed widget-kitty chase. I did my best.

SAFE!

some people are too stupid

some people are too stupid to raise a cat, let alone a human, sheesh! WTF part of don't put the cat outside did they not understand? Rolling Eyes Good to hear Sid, Asri and momma cat are still rollin along Smiling Kahuna has a nice light colored coat, seems somewhat uncommon and purdy. Is it my imagination, or does Kahuna have a long neck?

His coat is lovely but very

His coat is lovely but very fine and tweaks my allergies alot. I can cope though. We think he may be part or entirely Norweigian Forest cat because of the coat color and the double coat. He also has alot of personality traits in common with them. And his neck only looks long like that when something has his attention and he's craning it.

So on the general pet

So on the general pet comment, Buster has apparently blown an MCL or ACL, and is hobbling on three feet. THinking he just turned an ankle, we let him hobble for a week before taking him in, and the vet has now told me that the options are A) surgery on his knee (if it is indeed a ligament and not just arthritis) at 2500-3000 dollars, B) do a sedation/inspection which will involve x-rays and the vet checking his leg while he's under at 130 dollars, or C) keep him comfortable and realize he's 10 years old with an expected lifespan of 11-12 years. We can do that for 20-30 bucks a month in pain meds and cortisone.

Now, I'm not reducing Buster to a number, because he's a very loving dog, but neither am I spending 3k of my kids' money on any animal. The vet told me all this last night, and so Leigh and I decided to treat him with meds for a couple of months and see how his quality of life is, then if it looks like it might not respond to drugs we'd probably do the x-rays to see what exactly we're dealing with. If it's soft tissue, we'll probably just keep him comfortable.

Scarabfest attendees will be welcome to shower the pained puppy with gifts/food/treats/love the entire weekend, of course!

I'll just say I know where

I'll just say I know where you're coming from, and leave it at that. Smiling I'm sorry Buster's in pain. I hope the meds help ease it!
