today I am officially done with SOCM (Special Operations Combat Medic) school, and "Graduate" tomorrow (thursday). Following graduation I have a nice and long 12 hour break before starting SFMS (Special Forces Medical Sergeant) school on Friday (yay). It's been a long road thus far, but now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for my training. 6 more months of SFMS and I'll finally finish my medical training. Looking back it is quite impressive on what the schoolhouse has achieved with so many of us that had not a single piece of medical background, to the point where on my hospital rotations last month I was performing central lines, surgically removing a knife from a stabbing victim, Hands on and in a patient for a complete C-section birth, Assisting a surgeon with reconstructive hand surgery, and a host of other advanced procedures that other people go to school for years to be able to perform or assist with. At the end of our next 6 months of training we'll be doing complete medical evaluation/assessments and treatments (with follow ups) without a doctor on site to supervise the work we do.

It's an exciting 6 months ahead, and I'm looking forward to all of it. We start with our crash courses: veterinarian skills, laboratory analysis, optometry, dentistry, etc. Enough Knowledge in enough fields to be dangerous, but when we're in the middle of the mountains of Afghanistan and there's no other medical source for days around, this is the kind of base knowledge we'll be using to deal with the expected and most common problems of the various medical specialty fields. After our crash courses We go into our advanced surgery and wound care course, followed by our field rotations out at Indian reservations where it's just 2 of us serving the tribes.

So, onward and upward. Smiling Hopefully I'll be able to keep gaming through the classes, but it's all course-load dependent for now.

It really is impressive the

It really is impressive the level of medical training they are giving you. Seems like a good example of the old military recruiting theme that they will teach you cool skills. Btw, check your PMs Smiling

Damn, man - that's intense.

Damn, man - that's intense. Didn't think about all the different disciplines you'd need to use. Makes you wonder if part of the way to ease the healthcare crisis is put more people through that level of training and send them into the poorest areas to help people.

Rammer's right... it's REALLY impressive. Thanks again for all the work you put in and your dedication to our country! Smiling

yeah, its tempting to think

yeah, its tempting to think that medical care could be improved by aiding the private medical world with military trained medics. Overall, you'd think they could do some good, but I'm not sure how their interaction with the private health care sector would work. It would be a clash of cultures. The military doesn't take any shit, it just does what it has to do to get the job done, which is admirably pragmatic in the abstract, and might help cut through some of the massive layers of BS in the way of getting better health care outcomes, but things are always complicated by politics and money, and this is certainly the case with health care.

Money is always the sticking point. The level of medical technology that we have is very high, and that technology is very expensive, especially on the high end of things (ie the kind of treatments and drugs likely to fix big problems and save people's lives). We feel compelled to grant to everyone in society these treatments that we've developed, but the cost involved in doing that will bankrupt the nation, unless reforms are undertaken which one or the other political party will not accept, such as means testing benefits, eliminating wasteful/outdated programs, restricting lawsuits, allowing inter-state competition among insurers and so forth.

Congrats man. The military

Congrats man. The military is a very impressive learning institution. I was thinkin about it the other day. Here at langley, we have 18yr olds with 6 months of school and a few months of on the job training trusted to perform every aspect of maintenance on the the latest most expensive fighter in the world. And I have several friends that are deploying to afgany land 6 months after techschool that will be communicating with every type of aircraft from multiple countries to coordinate close air support. Its very awesome to think about. Congrats again

Congo Ratz. Damn, missed

Congo Ratz. Damn, missed the post that you went through SFAS. Are they still doing the med training in San Antonio? What group are you going to be attached to?

*starts singing:
Once there were 10,000 Green Berets.
They were caught by the NVA.
President was worried, didn't know what to do.
So he called on me instead of you.
If you are ever in trouble, don't delay
just call on the Rangers WE LEAD THE WAY!

oh, yea, SFAS was back in

oh, yea, SFAS was back in 2008. It's been a LONG road for me through the Q course. The medical schoolhouse is here on bragg, I think it was moved here back in the late 90's. So far I'm tentatively set for 10th group, though whether that's the battalions in Ft. Carson, Colorado, or 1-10 out in Germany I won't know till around august/september when I get close to finishing the medical school.
