Sugar, flour, ash...wait, what?!

So I went to the grocery store today to buy applesauce and a couple of doughnuts. I go to the bakery part of the store and look over the doughnuts. They have a surprisingly good selection. Just as I'm about to grab a couple and go, I see the sign below. Apparently they are into full disclosure, as one of the first ingredients in their plain donuts is...ash Shocked Now, maybe this is bakery code for something that is not the charred remains of other stuff, or stuff that shoots out of a volcano, but still, it was a bit of a WTF moment and I had to whip out the cell phone camera. The entry for "moisture" is also suspicious, hmm...Also, how/why the hell would one measure hundredths of a gram (and hundredths of a milligram for that matter) for baking purposes?

Still, I got a big apple fritter and a couple other small doughnuts that I presumed were NOT from the ash-recipe. But who knows, maybe I just ate some ash. Mmmm. They were good, didn't taste like ash...

Possible explanation

Baking soda and soda ash are similar, yet have a different chemical makeup, reactions and uses. Baking soda, known as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is composed of one atom of sodium, one atom of hydrogen, one atom of carbon and three atoms of oxygen. Soda ash, known as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is made from two atoms of sodium, one atom of carbon and three atoms of oxygen. In both compounds, the sodium will separate from the carbon when mixed with water, but their responses are different. When baking soda breaks down, it vacillates between an acid and base state, while soda ash becomes a base, which can be used to neutralize acids.

But still lol they could list it as Soda Ash instead of just Ash cause that does make a person go ewwwwwww

On the other side of the coin, you've also discovered what sharing your funky knowledge will get you. You are now ready to contemplate the meaning of...

"I'm a chemical superfreak, actually, but I still need a gun."

But will you use your powders for good...or evil? Sorry, powers. Oops. Razz

I dunno; what I got out of

I dunno; what I got out of all that was that Rummy just volunteered to make us something delicious to eat at SF this year.

I might have been reading the VERY fine print at the bottom though. Between some VERY small lines.
